The Newport Chinese Community Centre successfully applied for a grant of £95,673 from the National Lottery Community Fund at the beginning of 2020 for a three years project ‘Active Volunteering Gwent’.
The project will offer an outreach intergenerational volunteering service to befriend elderly Chinese people who are isolated in the community. It will also continue to provide a multilingual advocacy, advice and information service to Chinese residents living in Newport. The project will benefit older Chinese people with language barriers through volunteer engagement which will impact on their mental health and wellbeing. Young volunteers will be supported through tailored training to develop skills around community engagement.
With the funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, we are able to open the drop-in Centre for an extra day every week as soon as the current Coronavirus outbreak is over, the Centre will then be opened every Thursday on top of the usual Monday and Wednesday.
